7. Funakoshi Gichin

Funakoshi Gichin (1868-1957)
Founder of Shotokan

- Born: 1868, Shuri, Okinawa, Imperial Japan
- Died: April 1957, Tokyo, Japan
- Martial arts practiced: Shorin-ryu, Shorei-ryu, and Shotokan
- His Teachers: Anko Itosu (1830-1915), Anko Asato (1828-1906)
- Rank: Grandmaster (Sōke, Headmaster), 5th Dan (the highest rank at that time), Founder of Shotokan.
-Credited as: The Farther of Modern Karate
-Notable Students: Funakoshi- Yoshitaka, Shigeru-Egami (Founder: Shotokai), Otsuka- Hironori (Founder: Wado-Ryu), Masatoshi-Nakayama, Taiji-Kase, Hidetaka-Nishiyama, Tsutomu- Ohshima, Hirokazu-Kanazawa...
-His books: "Ryukyu Kempo: Todi (1922)", Rentan Goshin Todijutsu (1925), "Karate-Do Kyohan"(1935), Karate-do Nyumon (1943), and "Karate-Do: My Way of Life"(his autobiography) (1956).
-Notable events:
1. 1900's: President of the Okinawa Shobukai (Okinawan Martial Association)
2. 1906: He and his friends formed a group that made public karate demonstrations all over Okinawa, this must have been the fist time karate was made public.
3. 1916: He gave a karate demonstration to the Butokuden in Kyoto, Japan, which at that time was the official headquarters of all martial arts in Japan.
4. 1921: Karate demonstration in Okinawa for the Crown Prince (Hirohito Showa), who was later to become the Emperor of Japan.
5. 1922: Karate demonstration at the Fist National Athletic Exhibition in Tokyo organized by the Ministry of Education. Afterwards, he decided to remain in Japan to teach and promote his art, and never did return to Okinawa.
6. 1924: The first University Karate Club is formed at Keio University
7. 1933: The Okinawan art of karate was recognized as a Japanese martial art by the Japanese Martial Arts Committee known as the "Butoku Kai".
8. 1935: He founded Nihon Karate-do Shotokai (Kai means association) to collect funds to built a Hombu Dojo (headquarters training hall) called Shotokan.
9. 1936: He built the first Shotokan dojo in Tokyo and inaugurated in 1938 (This dojo was completely destroyed in an American bombing raid on Japan in 1945). He changed the Kanji characters of karate to mean Empty Hand instead of Tang Hand (Chinese Hand), both of which sound the same but are written differently.
10. 1949: A student and friend of Master Funakoshi, Isao Obata, founded the Nihon Karate Kyokai (NKK), also known to the outsiders as Japan Karate Association (JKA), naming Funakoshi as chief instructor or Shihan. However, Funakoshi was not supportive of all of the changes that the association made to his karate.
